No. As far as you were concerned, "no" was your favorite word. At least, around the Whitebeard Pirates' Second Division Commander, Portgas D. Ace, it was. Eight months he'd chased you around. During those eight months, you could've sworn you told him "no" more times than the number of freckles on his cheeks.

Until your disastrous encounter with Ace on some port of your frigid homeland, you were just a self-proclaimed tsundere, who unconsciously wooed any and all village boys' hearts. Then, when a rather gorgeous youth, who went by the name of Portgas D. Ace captured the village maidens' hearts - and oh, not to mention, burned down a third of the island, your life did a one-eighty.

Gone were your simple hopes of marrying some handsome newcomer to the island. And... somehow, suddenly, you were a wanted woman forced to take on the seas. All because of that irresistibly cute troublemaker.

Now, under normal circumstances, you wouldn't have complained about this twist of fate - not when there was a sexy beast chasing you from island to island to recruit you for some badass pirate crew. But now that you were reminded that your short-lived twenty-something years of daydreaming about poppies and blonde-haired princes were over, and you were almost always swooning whenever you saw that commander's dreamy face, you wanted someone to take the blame, someone to take responsibility for his deeds.

*

Long story short, you eventually surrendered and said "yes" to Ace's, or rather, Whitebeard's suggestion to join the crew. Still rather inexperienced with using the ability you often denied existed in the past, you were a time bomb set to detonate while roaming the seas alone. And thus, the realization marked the first and only occasion so far where you didn't reject Ace ruthlessly.

You were falling for Ace, and fast. As self-realization dawned on you, other crew members began noticing your little gestures too.

"Say, if you had to pick a crew member to sleep with for a night, who'd you pick?" Thatch had randomly brought up the question while you, Marco, and Ace were gathered around on an autumn night, playing Blackjack.

Choking on a mouthful of beer, you'd blushed and exclaimed, "No one! I'd rather die than sleep with any of you!"

"Ouch! Somehow that hurt, even though I knew you wouldn't pick me," Thatch laughed, rubbing the back of his head sheepishly. Then, pausing, he cast a glance over at Ace, who was furrowing his brow in concentration as he studied his hand. "What about Ace?"

"Huh?" You practically shrieked, half-expecting Ace to have said the same thing in unison, only to be met with silence from his side.

Awkwardly staring at Ace, who was now staring back at you with a curious smirk playing on his lips, you cleared your throat coolly, and pretended that you weren't at all fazed by the question. "W-What in the world are you talking about, Thatch? Has losing five games in a row gotten to your head now? Hell to the no! O-Of course I wouldn't be interested in Ace of all people! He's a hundred years too young for me!"

Too self-conscious and self-absorbed to study Ace's expression as you declared those words boldly, you failed to perceive the hint of disappointment in his facial features.

Still, despite the sexual tension and occasional awkward moment, you two became close friends and were known among the crew as an inseparable, troublemaking duo. Even during fights, you two often had each other's backs. Although logically, water and fire canceled each other out, you two managed to figure out how to make scalding steam that blinded and burned opponents.

When you two weren't fighting, you were busy pranking the other crew members, reveling in the furious cries that would echo throughout the entire ship. Oh, and of course, the one rare occasion where you fell sick - you swore you'd never forget the worried, yet relieved expression on Ace's face when you woke up.

Having spent eight whole months with the idiot, who was, admittedly, compatible with you, you often longed for something more. You could read his feelings on countless matters. Yet, when it came to his love life, you were as clueless as an aardvark stranded in the middle of a desert.

What in the world is that guy thinking, you often wore yourself out at night calculating probabilities, tossing and turning every which way, and wondering if there was ever going to be a day where his heart belonged to you.

*

You were in a rather peaceful slumber when you heard an irritatingly familiar voice hollering your name from the other end of the corridor, "Oi! [F/N]! Wake up!"

Mumbling a chain of incoherent curses under your breath, you tensed and pulled the covers over your head. You swore if that prick came barging into your room, you'd treat him to yet another bucket of ice-cold seawater to the head the next time he fell asleep. Oh, how lovely his startled shouts were last time. You could've sworn he'd just woken up from a wet dream.

A good fifteen minutes of silence passed. Just as you began relaxing your taut muscles and pulling down the covers from your head, the door to your cabin slammed open. "Ace! Get out!" You groaned.

"What are you doing still in bed, [F/N]? We just docked at a new island! Everyone's taking turns to head out into town! Let's go!" Ace cried, tugging at your duvet.

If he ripped the duvet to shreds like he did last time... oh boy, you were going to have some fun watching him grumble about missing articles of clothing for an entire month. Swatting his hands away blindly, you mumbled, still half-asleep, "No, and shut up. It's a Sunday morning. Leave me aloneee..."

You heard Ace sigh, and for a moment, you expected him to give up. "Fine, if you won't get up, I'll do this!"

Without another warning, Ace yanked the two blankets off your body, and onto the floor. Sitting up with a start, you would've begun pinching his ear, if it weren't for the fact that you were naked, save for your light pink lace panties.

"W-W-What a-are you doing topless under the covers, [F/N]?!" Ace shrieked as he hurriedly averted his eyes.

Although you were just as embarrassed, you had to admit: Ace's rare, flustered expression was rather adorable. Diving for the two blankets to cover yourself, you practically kicked him out the door. "Get out already, you pervert!"

*

Now, you weren't usually a person who dwelt on humiliating memories for very long. But you spent a good portion of the morning rolled up in your blanket burrito protectively like an inchworm, recalling that traumatizing incident.

The more you thought about it, the more you wondered: Was Ace feeling just as shaken as you were? Eventually deciding to get some sun, you pulled on a random hoodie and a pair of shorts, and wandered out on deck.

Squinting at the sun as you gazed out at the stretches of shimmering water, you heard someone call mockingly from the crow's nest, "How did you sleep last night, pink panties?"

Jaw dropping in disbelief, you resisted the urge to throw yourself overboard to spare yourself the taunts and jeers. "Shut the hell up before I smash your face in, Marco!" You threatened, raising your fist in anger.

"Ooh, scary-yoi." Marco teased from above.

Clenching your jaw in irritation, you reminded yourself that you'd get Marco back as soon as you were done quelling this rumor. Time to devote some quality time to brainstorm some stupid pineapple pranks. But, more importantly, had that freaking pansy Ace told everyone aboard about the color of your panties?

"Yo, pink panties! Which poor sap did you bed last night? Was it one of the crew, or do you have a secret place where you stash your man?" The voice of Thatch exclaimed from some hidden spot on the upper deck.

From the looks of it, yes was the answer. Not only that, but Ace had spread yet another groundless rumor about your sex life. Looks like he'll be losing most of his room's furniture too. Having false rumors buzzing around you bothered you, but what concerned you most was the fact that Ace seemed to accept that you were supposedly rather "promiscuous." Did he not share the same feelings as you did, after all?

Gnawing on your inner cheek anxiously, you unfolded a nearby chair, sat in it, and sulked as you listened to the waves ebb and surge.

*

You must've dozed off, as some time later, you heard someone shout, "Yo, is that Ace with a girl?"

At the word "girl," your heart leaped, and you were instantly awake. In all the eight months aboard the Moby Dick, you hadn't seen Ace spending time with a female in a loving way. Rather dubious about the announcement, but still feeling awfully curious, you craned your neck over the starboard side of the ship to see what everyone else was chattering about.

Surely enough, Ace, with a dazzling grin lighting up his face, had his arm around some pretty town girl's waist and was chatting and laughing comfortably with her. Pressing your lips into a grim line, you snuck back to your room before anyone else, or Ace, especially, noticed that your eyes were glazed over with tears.

*

"Yo, where's [F/N]? Is she still sleeping?" You heard Ace ask another crew member.

Normally, just hearing him ask about your whereabouts was enough to make your mind, heart, and soul soar for at least a week. But now, you'd been reduced to a pathetic pool of tears, and couldn't care less about him.

"I dunno. I thought I saw her sunbathing out on deck earlier, but I have no idea where she's disappeared to."

Praying that Ace could lose that endearingly caring side of his for once, you felt your heart plummet when you heard two knocks at the door. Hurriedly wiping away your tears and sweeping a whole pile of tissues under the bed, you pulled the covers over your shoulders and turned towards the wall.

"[F/N]? Are you in there?" Ace ventured cautiously, instead of immediately entering, no doubt because of the morning's incident.

Letting out a rather realistic cough, you muttered, "I'm sick, go away."

A moment later, you heard the door click open. "What's going on? Did you catch a cold while you were sunbathing?" There was a hint of worry in his voice that made you wilt on the inside for lying to him.

"Y-Yeah, I did." You manage to rasp and hoped that Ace wouldn't attribute the thickness in your voice to tears. "How was the town?" The moment the question slipped out due to common courtesy, you already dreaded his answer.

    "I met a girl. Her name's-"

Fuck. You shouldn't have asked in the first place.

"I know." Screw pride. If Ace said one more word about her, you'd be reduced to another weeping mess. So instead, you turn to your last resort and first defense: your cold exterior. "I know, because the crew was being so loud about it. Just be careful not to hurt the girl too much, Ace."

As you uttered the last sentence, you internally apologized to Ace. He didn't deserve such harsh words. He, of all people, would be gentle and affectionate to the woman he loved. Sure, you'd never been in anything more than a friendship with him, but of that, you were certain.

You expected him to relent and laugh such a remark off, as always. Initially, when you joined Whitebeard's crew, you two often bickered, and you'd storm off in a foul mood. Then, Ace would always come around to your hiding spots and apologize to you without fail.

However, for once, you heard him retort rather hotly, "Well, what about you, [F/N]? Weren't you just playing around with another guy last night?"

Heavens. You couldn't stand it anymore. Although your crush of eight months was now taken, you couldn't stand the thought of him imagining you to be such a fickle and licentious woman. Sitting up, you faced him with tears of frustration streaming down your cheeks. "What man, Ace? I didn't sleep with anyone recently!" You cried in a trembling voice.

Ace's jaw dropped at the sight of your tears. Not only had he seen you half-naked, but now, he was watching you cry shamelessly. In a rather lost voice, he answered, "You mean... you weren't with anyone all along?"

Overwhelmed with a mix of emotions, you smacked him lightly on the chest. "You idiot! I might say the most hurtful things at times, but... don't you know that I've loved you all along?"

At the rather storybook-like confession, you wanted to smack your head against the wall. If Ace took your words as a joke, you wouldn't be able to step out of your room. Ever. The crew would make sure you relived this nerve-wracking moment for the rest of your life.

"I... I didn't know..." Ace sputtered out, seemingly at a loss for words.

You shrugged dejectedly. "It's not like that matters now... now that you have that girl."

A stunned silence filled the cabin, before Ace bursts out into hearty guffaws. Rather unamused by the piece of the puzzle you seemed to be missing, you crossed your arms and huffed, "What's so funny, Ace? Are you going to tease me now? You heartless bully."

Still chuckling softly, Ace brought you into a warm embrace. "Sorry, I didn't mean it like that! That girl's no one special. She was just showing me the way back to the port. I don't even remember her name."

Eyes widening, you gazed up at him in shock. "You mean... Ace... what is the meaning of this...?"

Pressing his lips softly to your forehead, he murmured, "I've known for quite a while about your feelings. I... just couldn't bear watching you from afar anymore. I wanted to hear you admit that you liked me. Oh, and for the record, no one in the crew thinks you're sleeping around with random men. In fact, everyone thinks pretty much the opposite."

"You mean... this was... a set-up?" You said incredulously. If you weren't so stunned by how oblivious you were, you would've retorted with something along the lines of, "And Ace, do you honestly feel like what you said about my love life is reassuring to hear? I swear to god, you're so tactless sometimes."

Backing up several paces and raising both hands in surrender, Ace tried to defend himself, "Hey, don't put it that way! I didn't have any evil intentions, I swear!"

More than a little mortified, you grabbed Ace by the ear with one hand, while using the other to smack him, your tears long forgotten. "You horrid person! Are you even a human being? You trickster! You bully! You meanie! How could you? You idiot!"

From outside the room, the rest of the crew pressed their ears eagerly against the wood, trying to figure out what exactly you were scolding Ace for this time. They'd never seen you this agitated. Not even just this morning had you been acting this hot and bothered.

"Ow! Ow! Let go!" Ace protested.

You'd never let go of this jerk. "You creep! You pervert! You-"

Your insults were cut short when Ace effectively silenced you with a kiss. Tender and loving, his tongue managed to make your entire body go limp in his arms. When he finally withdrew, you gazed at him, still trying to follow the quick turn of events.

"Geez! Taking advantage of the situation like that! You wim-"

For the second time, Ace captured your lips chastely.

"I. Want. To. Hear. You. Say. It." Ace whispered in your ear when he parted his lips from yours.

    "Say what?" You asked warily.

"The only phrase you're allowed to say to me with the word 'you' in it." He murmured rather seductively.

Seductive Ace was rather hard to resist. Still, you pouted and spat, "I refuse, you chicken!"

Pausing, you averted your gaze and mumbled, "You... haven't said it either."

For the second time that day, you saw Ace's face flush, as he covered his mouth with a hand and muttered, "All right, I guess I'll say it first then. I love you, [F/N]."

The sweetness in those words render you speechless, and a silence fills the cabin, before Ace clears his throat, trying to regain his composure, "Now, you say it."

Feeling rather pressured, you blushed, "As if I can, you fruitcake!"

Before you could fire another string of insults at him, Ace had you pinned by both wrists to the bed as he hovered over you. You noted the predatory glint in his eyes. Damn, you'd never seen him act this domineering before. "Do I have to teach you how to say yes?"

Needless to say, for the rest of the night, all the crew heard was your screaming of one word over and over: "Yes!"
This is my first story on DeviantArt. And yes... I decided to to utilize the classic tsundere card on y'all. Why? Because I can. Enjoy! ♡ Llama Emoji-09 (Drinking Tea) [V1]
